Update on Maritime Sanctions, Iran, and the Dark Fleet
OFAC, the U.K., the E.U. and other authorities are intensifying enforcement across the maritime and commodities industries. This year alone: a quarter-billion-dollar penalty against one of India’s largest companies for dealing in Iranian LPG, sanctions on independent refineries and oil terminals in China, an expansion of E.U. and U.K. measures targeting Russia, and a series of conflicts that have reshaped Iranian and Venezuelan sanctions. OFAC is known to have further major penalties on deck. At the same time, courts and arbitrators from London to Singapore have steadily raised the bar on the level of compliance expected. Maritime sanctions compliance has never been harder to get right.
