The annual Day of the Seafarer (DotS) is observed across the globe on 25th June and this year's theme is "Seafarers Matter".
Day of the Seafarer is a global campaign coordinated by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and was first established in a resolution adopted by the 2010 Diplomatic Conference in Manila to adopt the revised STCW Convention. Its stated purpose is to recognise the unique contribution made by seafarers from all over the world to international seaborne trade, the world economy and civil society as a whole.
The resolution "encourages Governments, shipping organizations, companies, shipowners and all other parties concerned to duly and appropriately promote the Day of the Seafarer and take action to celebrate it meaningfully".
We at Pole Star are delighted that the theme of DotS 2017 is "Seafarers Matter" because protecting and supporting seafarers has been at the core of our business since inception. Caring about seafarers' well-being has driven us to develop Ship Security Reporting Systems to guard against piracy, tracking solutions with SOS functionality and numerous other services that help to protect the lives of seafarers and make their jobs easier.
On DotS 2017, the IMO is engaging ports and seafarer centres to demonstrate how much seafarers matter to them, by sharing and showcasing best practices in seafarer support and welfare. Special events will be organised, including:
- social events in port to celebrate seafarers
- public open days at seafarer centres
- free wifi in port for a day, etc.
The IMO calls on anyone who is part of the shipping industry, as well as general public, to signal their own appreciation of the importance of seafarers, by supporting the campaign.
