Day of the Seafarer 2020

This year, on the 10th anniversary of the annual Day of the Seafarer, a campaign has been made, calling for seafarers to be officially recognised as key workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Day of the Seafarer pays tribute to seafarers, many of whom are away from home months at a time, while acknowledging their sacrifice and the difficulties they face due to the nature of their career.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak, seafarers have remained on the frontline, playing an essential role in maintaining the flow of vital goods, such as food, medicines, and medical supplies, while facing increasingly difficult working conditions due to the pandemic.

With the call for Member States to recognise seafarers as key workers, comes the provision of the support, assistance, and travel options given to all other key workers.

In addition, the campaign aims to raise awareness for the work achieved by seafarers in response to the pandemic and to thank them for their essential contribution.

"Just like other key workers, seafarers are on the front line in this global fight. They deserve our thanks. But they also need – and deserve – quick and decisive humanitarian action from governments everywhere, not just during the pandemic, but at all times.” General Kitack Lim, IMO Secretary.
