Pole Star has been named as one of the best in the UK’s £40bn maritime sector after being shortlisted in the first ever Maritime UK Awards.
Pole Star has been shortlisted in the Business of the Year category after impressing industry judges.
Founded in 1998, Pole Star is a multi-award winning technology company providing maritime-centric SaaS solutions incorporating sanctions compliance, risk management, vessel tracking, safety, security and regulatory compliance business applications. Pole Star understands the needs of the maritime sector, serving over 1200 shipping companies, 100 governments, and 50 banks and commodity trading firms directly or through our global distribution network.
The Business of the Year category was open to businesses of any size, and was looking for business that demonstrated a real understanding of their target market and positioned or adapted themselves accordingly, showing impressive growth/growth potential, and sustainability in terms of one or more of the following: job creation; turnover and/or national/international impact.
"Our nomination as a finalist in the Business of the Year category of the inaugural Maritime UK Awards is a true testament to our team's hard work, particularly over the past year. With over 20 years as a key player in the maritime industry, 2019 has seen us rapidly adapt to the current industry needs within the financial markets, focusing on strategic partnerships to help us grow as a company and assist a larger audience in ensuring maritime trade compliance." -Julian Longson, Managing Director, Pole Star
We believe that Pole Star embodies all these qualities outlined by this award's criteria, having started out as the first company to develop real-time tracking in the maritime industry in 1998, and since then, continuing to rapidly evolve around current industry needs.
Over the past 30 years, financial crime has become a major concern for governments. 90% of world trade travels by ship and maritime trade is estimated at $17 trillion per year. World trade, the banks that finance it & the shipping industry that supports it are being increasingly targeted by regulators globally. It has never been more vital for business to ensure that they can keep at pace and comply with the fastest-moving and most complex sanctions & regulatory landscape we have ever seen. With this in mind, in 2014 we developed PurpleTRAC, the first RegTech solution incorporating both vessel screening and tracking, allowing major international trade financing banks, international trading companies, governments and flag administrations and maritime insurers to automate, streamline and record their regulatory process.
But solving major issues requires collaboration, so in early 2019, we partnered officially with Dow Jones to set a new standard for safeguarding against criminality in maritime trade by providing a more complete view of the regulatory risks faced by organizations.
Ben Murray, Director of Maritime UK said: “Our judges have been blown away by the quality of entries in these inaugural awards. The bar really has been set high and the panel have had a difficult task whittling it down to the final shortlist. Those who have been named as finalists should be very proud.”
Stuart Baker, Head of Local Growth at the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and Chair of the Maritime UK Regional Council, added: “We’ve always known the maritime industries are innovative, but these award submissions have really affirmed that. We’ve seen some really interesting work that’s taking place and we can’t wait to unveil the winners in September.”
The Maritime UK Awards are being hosted by the Solent LEP and will take place at the Leonardo Royal Hotel Southampton Grand Harbour on 19 September, as thousands of people flock to the city for the Southampton International Boat Show.
