Pole Star Partners with Lars Thrane & Iridium to Support the First Truly Global Ship-to-Shore Satellite Communication System

The world’s leading provider of LRIT testing, Pole Star, is pleased to support the new Lars Thrane LT-3100 GMDSS terminal for LRIT compliance and Iridium Global Maritime Distress and Safety Systems.

London, 5 May 2022

The LT-3100S GMDSS System is the world's first and only truly global GMDSS satellite communication solution. With all Iridium GMDSS services now available through a single terminal, it can be used as the primary product on vessels, covering all the requirements for connectivity between the ship and shore.

As an Authorised Service Provider (ASP) for over 100 Flags, Pole Star now provides LRIT compliance services for the new terminal and the ability to test and show the data from within our NDCs.

The terminal is designed for all IMO vessels and meets all standards and certification requirements needed for worldwide maritime satellite communications equipment. It is recognised by the IMO and SOLAS convention, and covers all GMDSS services, including LRIT, SSAS, Distress Alert, GPS, and Maritime Safety Information (MSI) among others.

Peter Thrane, CEO of Lars Thrane A/S, thanks Iridium and Pole Star respectively for their commitment and work in adding the LRIT service to the LT-3100S GMDSS System. The LT-3100S GMDSS system can now offer the functionality needed on all SOLAS vessels - regardless of size and on all oceans. The LRIT service is an important functionality to offer and completes the LT-3100S GMDSS System as the most competitive and advanced product available in the GMDSS satellite market today.

“Since the launch of Iridium GMDSS, both SOLAS and non-SOLAS vessels have greatly benefited from the enhanced capabilities, completely global coverage, and affordable service costs,” says Kyle Hurst, Director of Maritime Safety and Security, Iridium. “The addition of LRIT testing from leading provider, Pole Star, enhances the capabilities of the LT-3100S GMDSS system to further ensure mariners have everything they need to be efficient and safe at sea.”

Julian Longson, CEO of Pole Star, says “Since we first began providing LRIT services over 15 years ago, we have worked closely with the shipborne equipment manufacturers, communication service providers, type approval bodies, class societies, maritime administrations / flags, and the IMO to provide advice and guidance on the latest associated technologies. Over this period, technologies have evolved to become more powerful and functional, and we are always pleased to support the latest advancements that provide best-in-class equipment and services for the 36,000+ ships that we track and monitor worldwide.

This new piece of equipment will provide multi-regulation, multi-functional Voice, SMS, SBD, and Modem Data coverage across the gambit of LRIT, SSAS, and bespoke tracking and monitoring applications, which the industry will surely welcome and will no doubt form a critical part of the maritime infrastructure for the foreseeable future”.
