Pole Star’s VMS solution is a sophisticated, intuitive and secure web-based application that includes modules for registering and tracking vessels, entering fisheries boundary polygons, generating reports, and managing permits and licences, all operating within a state-of-the-art Web 2.0 application.

We have offices in London, the United States, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Panama and support our clients on a 24 x 7 basis.

For fisheries management organisations, Pole Star’s fisheries monitoring solution offers vessel tracking, vessel information and photos. For vessel owners, agents and charterers it offers secure access to their own fleet of vessels. For international organisations we offer built-in features allowing data sharing under regional fisheries management programs including European, Pacific and NAF based data exchange formats.

Pole Star has teamed with The Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS) to provide training and advice on vessel tracking. ANCORS is Australia’s only multidisciplinary university-based centre dedicated to research, education and training on ocean law, maritime security and natural marine resource management.

The operations centre processes position and catch reports within a high availability environment suitable for the collection, storage and forwarding of evidentiary data. Fault tolerance is achieved through the use of HP servers, EMC storage, VMWare virtualization and Sonicwall firewalls or cloud hosted sites using Amazon Web Services (AWS). For customers who prefer to deploy in-house (using their own infrastructure) we provide reference implementations under VMWare. This enables fully virtualized hosting within a client’s own datacenter environment.

We offer a full range of assistance in the regulatory, prosecution and legal aspects of operating a Vessel Monitoring System Services provided include: assistance in drafting VMS regulations, expert analysis and testimony, preparation of custom reports for evidentiary use (i.e. case packages) and attendance as technical experts at international bodies. Our staff are experienced in fisheries enforcement, including both the commercial and government aspects of operating fisheries monitoring systems.

Compatible hardware

Compatible with a wide-range of hardware

Inmarsat C equipment already installed on the majority of vessels is frequently used for LRIT compliance. Dedicated terminals based on Inmarsat M2M and Iridium can also be used. For maximum performance or where the existing onboard equipment is not suitable or a stand-alone LRIT solution is required, Pole Star recommends the installation of a dedicated LRIT terminal. Pole Star offers a LRIT equipment package, directly or through our partners.

Queensland VMS

A part of Queensland’s Sustainable Fisheries Strategy 2017-2027 is a policy mandate requiring VTUs to be fitted by operators of net, crab, and line boats (including tenders) by 1st January 2019 (and all other commercial fishing boats by 1 January 2020).

Pole Star / Absolute Software Pty. Ltd. is widely recognised as a leading provider of fisheries Vessel Monitoring System (VMS), Vessel Tracking Unit (VTU), and satellite airtime (VMS reporting services) to the regulatory and commercial fisheries sector. Since 1998 we have continued to serve multiple government agencies, RFMOs, fishing companies, and fishermen worldwide. Today in Australia we provide Federal VMS and VMS reporting services to the Australian Fisheries Management Agency (AFMA) together with various services to all States, and as such, strongly support the wider Australian fisheries sector.

A part of Queensland’s Sustainable Fisheries Strategy 2017-2027 is a policy mandate requiring VTUs to be fitted by operators of net, crab, and line boats (including tenders) by 1st January 2019 (and all other commercial fishing boats by 1 January 2020). In support, Pole Star provide dual AFMA type approved / Queensland authorised VTUs inc. Orbcomm / Skywave IDP690, IDP800, and ST6100, along with associated VMS reporting services. The cost of each VTU, limited to one per vessel, will be reimbursed directly by Queensland Fisheries.

Vessels with pre-existing VTUs on board e.g. Inmarsat C, may nominate this equipment as a secondary VTU to be used in case of failure of the primary unit. Pole Star will integrate and place the back-up unit in standby mode (i.e. activated but dormant) at no cost to the operator if using a Pole Star-sourced primary VTU, or at $10.00 AUD / month if using a 3rd party supplied VTU. Use of a back-up VTU will ensure continued compliant fishing operations in the event of a primary VTU failure until the until is repaired or replaced.

Conscious of the operator’s investment, Pole Star can also provide the operator with web-access to their own “private-VMS” system providing for the tracking, monitoring, and activity analysis, as well as additional safety (last known position). Our customer services and technical support operations teams are available 24/7 to support this activity.
